Shadow Drawings

The shadows from this plant create a structured crosshatched drawing that ranges in value and texture due to the leaves distance from the concrete tat gives the lighter shadows a more sensitive line because of the concrete's texture.

The corrugated cardboard creates a toothy texture to add more dimension to the shadowing in this drawing, and the shape of the cube lends to the large variation in value, letting only a limited amount of light through. The change in pattern and texture on the right wall of the cube makes the drawing more interesting by adding another element for the light to react to.

The soft folds in the blanket create a striking variation in shadowing and color due to the differences in texture and shine throughout the fabric. the unstructured lines creating loose shadows in the blanket contrast nicely with the structured lines of fabric that catch the light.

Hands are the most difficult thing to draw in my opinion because of familiarity and all the subtle bends and lines. The shadow that the hand casts is simple, yet the red background accentuates the many values throughout the shadows that are rarely observed. Reflected light from the red background creates a striking variation in color on the shadows on the hand and exaggerates the cracks and crevices throughout.
